The City of Ann Arbor
The city of Ann Arbor was founded on May 25, 1824. John Allen (from Virginia) and Elisha Ramsey (from New York) had selected a well-forested site along a creek. They purchased 640 acres @ $1.25 /acre.
The name, originally Annarbour, most likely acknowledged its generous stand of burr oak trees and honored the common name of their wives. It remains the only city in the world with that name. Ann Arbor had already been designated the Washtenaw County government seat and was later selected as the location for the University of Michigan in 1837, the same year that Michigan became a state.
